UK Ltd Companies and Bitcoin Treasuries, Why the UK Is Behind and What to Do About It

Tony Ward | Bitcoin Treasury Advisory | 13 Mar 2026

US companies have been building Bitcoin treasury positions since 2020. UK limited companies are significantly behind. Here is why, and what the directors who are acting now understand that others do not yet.

The gap between US and UK corporate Bitcoin adoption is not regulatory. Bitcoin is entirely legal for UK limited companies to hold. It is treated as property under UK law. HMRC has published clear guidance on its tax treatment. FRS 102 provides an accounting framework. The gap is cultural and informational.

UK business culture tends toward caution on new asset classes. The financial press has covered Bitcoin primarily through a speculative and volatile lens rather than a treasury and monetary policy lens. Most UK accountants have not yet been asked to account for Bitcoin and have therefore not developed a view on it.

The directors acting now share a specific understanding. They have looked at the monetary environment, structural deficits, M2 expansion, real inflation versus headline CPI, and concluded that holding surplus cash in sterling is itself a risk that compounds annually. They have looked at Bitcoin's fixed supply, its 16-year track record across multiple market cycles, and its growing institutional adoption, and concluded that a right-sized allocation is a more rational response to that risk than doing nothing.

They are not gamblers. They are not speculators. They are business owners who have done the analysis and acted with structure. The UK will catch up. The question is whether your company is among the first or the last to do so.
