What Is Bitcoin — The Honest Explanation for UK Business Directors

Tony Ward | Bitcoin Treasury Advisory | 20 Mar 2026

Not the hype version. Not the trading version. The honest explanation of what Bitcoin actually is, why it was built, and why UK company directors are starting to pay attention.

Bitcoin is digital money governed by mathematics rather than people. No central bank can print more of it. No government can freeze it. No board can vote to change the rules. It launched in January 2009 — three months after Lehman Brothers collapsed — created by someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The identity remains unknown. What was left behind was a nine-page white paper and open-source code that created the first form of digital money that no authority can censor, confiscate, or inflate at will.

There will ever be exactly 21 million Bitcoin. That number is written into the code and cannot be changed. Every four years the rate of new supply is cut in half. The last coin will be mined around 2140. This fixed supply is why Bitcoin behaves differently from every other asset. Sterling, gold, property, equities — all of these have supply that can be expanded. Bitcoin cannot.

For UK business directors, the relevant question is not whether Bitcoin is interesting. It is whether holding surplus cash in sterling — a currency whose supply has expanded significantly since 2020 — is the right decision for your balance sheet. That is the question BTA exists to help you answer properly.
